A Reevaluation of the Concept of Community

Madeleine Leuthardt, Fordham University

Abstract

What is meant by the term community? This concept is in almost constant use in sociological analysis; yet there seems to be a nebulous quality about it. In some frames of reference it refers to a town or small city located within some specific geographical boundaries. In some analytical schemes "community" pertains to a state of mind. How can one approach a community study or attempt to investigate the possible existence of community unless there exist some criteria of community which can be used as units of measurement or investigation.
