The Colonial Salt Problem of New York and New England

Bro Kelly, Fordham University

Abstract

This study was undertaken tor the specific purpose of determining the sources of salt supply for the inhabitants of New York and New England during the arduous years of colonization and the struggle for independence. What has emerged from this research is a picture of these settlers harassed by frequent salt shortages incident to an over-dependence on uncertain salt imports and the failure to develop a substantial domestic salt industry.
