Abstract

CHAPTER IAGRICULTURE IN THE PHILIPPINE ECONOMYThe Republic of the Philippines is a country larger than Italy and a little smaller than the British Isles. it lies between the Pacific Ocean and the China Sea and consists of about 7,100 islands and islets, The country has three major islands. In the north is the largest of these, Luzon with 40,420 square miles; the next largest is Mindanao in the south with 36,537 square miles; and the Visayan Islands in the central part with 29,826 square miles. Altogether the Philippine Islands, excluding its lakes, has a land area of about 114,800 square miles. This is more than the land area of the states of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware combined, Its shore line brought together is greater than that of all continental United States.
