Character Analysis in the Poetic Novels of Ramón Pérez de Ayala

Marcus Pizzolato, Fordham University

Abstract

Ramon Perez de Ayala enjoys a good reputation in modern Spanish literature. It is unfortunate that he has not been studied more widely here and abroad. To date only one volume has been dedicated to him in its entirety. This work, Ramon Perez de Ayala, su vida y obras, by Francisco Agustin, has been styled a rambling panegyric with little or no value either as biography or as criticism. There have been many articles written on Ayala but there is a question as to their critical value. As for a bibliography of Ayala's works, Ayala himself says, " ..., de seguro esta Vd. en lo cierto, en cuanto todo ese material no ha sido clasificado y unificado en alguna noticia bibliografica." Bearing in mind the difficulties which lie ahead in the writing of this dissertation, the author of this paper sets out to write a tentative survey on the criticism available on Rambon Perez de Ayala's character analysis in the poetic novels.
