Reactions of Delinquent and Non-Delinquent Children to Humor

John Paul McKinney, Fordham University

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship which may exist between delinquency and reactions to various types of tumor. It is believed that delinquante will tend to favor ug- gressive-type cartoons over non-aggressive-typa cartoons nore often than will non-delinquents. For the purposes of this investigation, "aggressive-type" cartoons are these portraying elements of derision, Badias, aggression, or ridiculo, openly expressed and aimed at ba particular person or institution, who is the "butt" of the joke. "Hon-aggressive-typo cartoons are those containing none of these cleusats, but which are funny merely because of a purely painless incongruity. The above hypotheses are based on the fact that ug gression is the trait most characteristic of delinquants, for a delinquent is here defined as a youth who has come into conflict with socisty because of overt acts of aggression.
