Essays in Demographic and Health Economics
Abstract
In this dissertation, I focus on the effect of aging on individuals’ decision making, particularly in the context of decisions regarding borrowing behavior and labor supply. It also explores how health-related events impact demography. Chapter 1 evaluates the effect of old age pensions on the older population's debt behavior; Chapter 2 shows the impact of health on labor supply in middle age and older adults; Chapter 3 predicts how the current COVID-19 pandemic will affect future fertility in the United States. I conclude that pensions and health changes have significant and remarkable effects on individuals' behaviors and social welfare.
