A Study to Determine the Relative Inflence of the Three Types of Competition on Achievement in Arithmetic
Abstract
Since competition is considered to be one of the effective types of motivation, it has been chosen for the purpose of this study. The problem in this investigation was to discover the relative influence of three types of competition on achievement in arithmetic. These types involved group-versus-group competition, individual-versus- individual competition, and self-competition, that is, the individual endeavored to improve his own previous record. The subjects of the investigation were ninety-four girls, enrolled in the fifth-grade of a parochial school in the City of New York.
