Roman Elements in the De Rerum Natura of Lucretius

Abstract

The purnose of this present study is to illustrate originality of thought in the De Rerum Natura of Lucretius. Desnite the aim of the author to produce exactly the teachings of Enicurus, there are diver- genees in thought and idea. These have been summarized in the intro- duction to this study. In the chanters following the massages which illustrate well known characteristics of the Roman mind have been collected. They show the innate devotion of the mind of Lucretius to the Roman religion, his interest in Roman history and in contem- porary events, his utilitarianian, and his rhetorical training. A study of his personality has been made in relation to its subjective effects on his philosophy of life.
