The "Gnomai" in Menander

Jerome G Kovalcik, Fordham University

Abstract

When Greek poetry is read as a whole and moreover is compared with other literatures, one is struck by the fre- quency with which moral ideas are expressed in it. Per- haps it is due to a tendency, which the Greek art has, to generalize, as for example, Greek sculpture studies the beauty of different parts of the body in many models and then fuses them together into one ideal form. The Greek mind always tended towards the metaphysical, the philosophical questions of life and the manner in which the Greek genius gave expression to these ideas was still more philosophical and abstract.
