Influence of Malebranche on Hume

Gertrude Veronica Brady, Fordham University

Abstract

It is possible to study the system of a philosopher without referring to his indebtedness to his predecessors. Yet the best method of interpreting his thought is to analyze it with the view to discover also the genesis of his theories. This is valuable for a better understanding of his thought. By studying previous solutions to problems he has explained, we see the influence they must have had on him. With this in mind I shall compare several questions in the philosophy of David Hume, the eminent critic of eighteenth century England, with the same explanations in Nicolas Malebranche, the seventeenth century French Oratorian.
