Francis Jeffrey's Criticism of Joanna Bailie's Plays
Abstract
Since the publication of the first number of the Edinburgh Review in 1802, there have been two decided schools of opinion on the critical position of Francis Jeffrey. To some men he was a harsh, ruthless, sneering bigot, who enjoyed nothing more than destroying the reputation of some great man and whose critical opinions were given simply for the sake of being perverse. They accused him of having small learning and of being somewhat superficial and uninspired.
