Sheila Brennan, Fordham University

Abstract

The problem in this survey was to discover and compare the leisure- time radio interests and listening habits of 200 public school pupils and 200 parochial school pupils of the junior high school level in two schools in the northeastern section of Pennsylvania in the Wilkes-Barre area. The purpose was: (1) to learn how many of the subjects liked to listen to the radio; (2) to ascertain the number who had radios in their homes, and the number who were in possession of personal radios; (3) to determine the programs and types of radio programs to which the pupils of both schools listen; (4) to discover similarities and differences of choice as revealed by school, sex, chronological age, grade in school, I... and socio-economic status; (5) to calculate the amount of time spent, and to note how it was employed by the subjects while listening; (6) to investi- gate the guidance offered in the choice of programs; (7) to note co-listeners, and (8) to observe the position of radio-listening es compared with other leisure-time activities.
