Religious-Teacher Education in the Archdiocese of New York

Abstract

Introduction. In the United States, the foundation of Irish schools has been one of the factors responsible for the growth and increasing influence of the Catholic Church. As the parish schools increased in number, maintained by the voluntary contributions of Catholics themselves, the present Catholic educational system evolved. By Divine mandate, education is an essential characteristic of Christ's Church. Christ commissioned His Apostles then He said: All power in heaven a.nd on earth has been given to Me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Boly Ghost, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you all days, even unto the consummation of the world. Religious teachers are cooperators of the apostolic band which, under the leadership of Peter and Paul, began to fulfill the above mandate of Christ; they are the loyal assistants of the Apostolic successors, the Bishops of trie Church of Christ.
