The Status of Edith Wharton as a Social Historian
Abstract
In the foreword of Valentine's Manual of Old New York, dealing with the nineteenth century, Henry Collins Brown states, "Nothing like the charm and fascination of old New York in those days exists at present. It seems like a different world." The city, however, attempts to keep fresh the memory of this old New York by supporting an annual publication devoted only to the city's past. Nothing about the present appears in its pages. As a matter of fact it is the only city in the country which sponsors such a publication.
