Abstract

In tracing the development of realism in the French novel, we aim to account for its origin; to follow its progress in its manifestations in the beast epic, the Roman de Renart, in the fabliaux, in the Pantagruel of Rabelais, and above all in the picaresque type of fiction both in Spanish and in French literature; lastly, to show that this genre is a reaction against a prevailing literary mode of unreality, or exaggerated idealism.
