Hrotsvitha as a Dramatist

John Joseph Woods, Fordham University

Abstract

This dissertation has as its purpose a study of 1 the importance of Hrotsvitha, the tenth century Saxon dramatist. After observations on her life and times, an analytical study of her plays will be made, and finally a summary discussion of their characteristics will be presented. Her poems and dramas have been translates into the vernacular both by German and by French writers, and have been discussed, usually only in passing, by several English students of literature. Among the modern English scholars who have done research on the life and writings of Hrotsvitha, stand 2 3 William Henry Hudson and H. J. W. Tillyard. The latter has none brilliant work in translating the plays. Hudson has confined himself to textual criticism and annotation, with but a few general remarks on the dramas. The most enthusiastic commentator has been Christopher 4 St. John.
