Early English Travellers to India

Helen M Curtin, Fordham University

Abstract

Any reference to English voyages in the age of Elizabeth invokes a picture of the reckless raids of Drake and Hawkins, the depredations of the buccaneers of the Spanish Main, or the voyages of discovery along the northern coast of America by such men as Frobisher and Davis. And, for the majority of students, the history of British India virtually begins with Clive.
