An Examination of the Epistemological Dualism of the Crtical Realists

Mary Kiernan, Fordham University

Abstract

In considering the theory of epistemology of the Critical Realists it is important that we understand what is meant by epistemology as this term is used by con- temporary philosophers, in order that we may know the extent of the matter to be studied. Epistemology is regarded today as including many problems and has been defined by modern philosophers in terms of these problems. Professor W. P. Montague, of Barnard College, who has been actively identified with Critical Realism since the early years of the present century, states the problem of epistemology as follows: "To what extent, if any, are the things and qualities of the world dependent upon their 1 being related as objects to a knower or subject?" Professor Jacques Maritain, one of the foremost Thomists of our times, on the other hand, tells us that epistemology or criticism "has the function of judging knowledge it- 2 self."
