The Expulsion of the Society of Jesus From Paraguay

Joseph U Saez, Fordham University

Abstract

When we speak of the Paraguay Reductions, we do not speak only of the present Republic of Paraguay, but of a vast territory by that name which included part of what are now the republics of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Uruguay, In fact, most of the Reductions were situated outside of what today is Paraguay, Because the Spanish government called all these territories "Paraguay", the Jesuits, when they arrived there in 1607, named their province after the territory in which they were to work.
