The Establishment of the Second Spanish Republic

Agnes M Hogan, Fordham University

Abstract

The establishment of the Second Spanish Republic is the subject of this dissertation. Upon taking office in 1991, the Republican set about the task of reforming Spain, and delved into many aspects of Spanish life. As far as possible, we intend to try to show just what the Second Republic attempted to do, and see if it carried out its plans and to what extent Spain benefited, if the country did gain any- thing from this government. The Introduction will give the background for the study; the nineteenth century particularly will be considered, since it was during that period that the "revolutionary" ideas gained such a strong foothold in Spain. Chapter II will be devoted to the conditions in Spain after the World War and the Dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, which preceded the fall of the monarchial government of Spain. A chapter will be devoted to the Revolution of 1931, while the Constitution of 1931 will be considered in Chapter IV. The remaining chapters will consider the actual operation of the government of the Second Republic.
