Backgrounds, Sources and Peculiarities of Young's Night Thoughts
Abstract
Were one to read the whole nine books of Night Thoughts without having reference either to the poet's life or to the temper of the times in which they were written, one would be at a loss to understand them. Night follows night with dogged persistence, often with little else, and the impression gained from the whole is that Young did not share with his contemporaries a zeal for well-ordered composition.
