The Salons of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries: A Comparative Study

Marie Rita Rozelle, Fordham University

Abstract

The salons of yore! These words evoke interesting images of an eventful past. One might ask: What is meant by the word salon? Literally it is an apartment or room in which one receives and entertains friends. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, periodic social reunions were held under the auspices of some distinguished women in their homes. Hence, for this subject which interests us, salon may designate a rendezvous for fashionable receptions.
