Colonial Newtown, a Village in Queen's County, Long Island
Abstract
During the early seventeenth century, when modern Newtown was covered with dense forests, ribboned by paths which knew only the tread of Indian feet, it was known as Mespaetches, an Indian neme aptly descriptive of the swamp 1 land along a creek. Later, the English called it Mespat, then 2 3 Middleburgh, Hastings, and finally the name it bears to-day.
