Hawaii: Her Diplomatic Relations With the United States, 1820 - 1893
Abstract
During the sixteenth century while Spanish seamen plied between Mexico and the Philippines, it is certain that some of them touched the Hawaiian Islands. However, it would have been disadvantageous to the grandees to reveal their existence; for the numerous inlets would have provided excellent hiding places for pirates anxious to secure the treasure carried on the Spanish Main. Somewhat later, however, when, after the defeat of the Armada, Spain's sea power began to wane, the charts began to show the islands in the Pacific.
