Native Opposition to the Elizabethan Land Policy in Ireland
Abstract
It is with her title "Queen of Ireland" that we are interested, and the steps she took to establish that authority in Ireland necessary to secure a clear title to the land, and the resentment caused by that procedure.Briefly sketching the steps by which England assumed control of the neighboring kingdom, we find that during the twelfth century John of Salisbury prepared a letter to be read by Pope Adrian IV seeking Papal approval for Henry to enter the land that he might reduce a disobedient and corrupt people, as well as eradicate all sin and wickedness and instruct the ignorant.
