The Legality of the Title of the Dutch to New Netherlands

Alfred J Sellers, Fordham University

Abstract

The question of whether the title to New Nether- lands was always vested in the English crown or whether it was obtained through conquest and cession is a subject which has been a source of some legal disturbance almost since the evacuation of New Amsterdam by the Dutch in 1664. The chief cause for controversy has been the question of title to real property not only in New Amsterdam but also in the adjacent settlements of the Dutch.
