Samuel Gompers and the Eight-Hours Movement

Eileen P Danary, Fordham University

Abstract

The American Federation of Labor movement for shorter hours, which began around the year 1881, had its roots in England. The Industrial Revolution started in England and it was natural that the first movement for a shorter workday for labor should come from there. The aristocracy, perhaps because of its resentment for the assumption of social and economic equality by the common manufacturers, together with its sympathy for the workers, took up the cry for shorter hours in Parliament.
