Francis James, the Poet of Nature

Teresa D Walsh, Fordham University

Abstract

Toward the end of the nineteenth century, to be ex- act, in 1893, a series of poems entitled Vers fell into the hands of the Mercure de France. The author of the collection, Francis Jammes, was completely unknown to literary men in Paris. The Vers had been privately is- sued, and bore the name of a provincial printer, J. Goude- Dumesmil, Orthez, a little town in the Basses-Pyrenees.In December of that year an article appeared in this magazine in which the writer, L. Dumur, wished to know who Francis Jammes was. He wondered if Jammes were a pseudonym. The name Orthez was the only thing which shed any light on the identification of the poet.
