The History of the Levant Company, 1581-1605

Angela E Lamanna, Fordham University

Abstract

The history of the Levant Company is the history of the beginnings of England's supremacy in the East. It was this company of merchants, trading with the Near East, that laid the foundations of the British Empire, reaching out to a part of the world, vaguely known and perilously distant, leading to a supremacy second to none, and envied by all. Concomitant with the rise of English commercial enterprise in the East, there developed a diplomatic intercourse which made way for the preponderance of English influence, which has been such a conspicuous feature of modern European history.
