Maritain's Practical Philosophy: A Philosophy of Culture

James Francis Kane, Fordham University

Abstract

Averting our eyes for a time from the broad panorama of history, let us center our gaze upon the Middle Ages, wherein the seed of Christianity attained its first full flowering in the temporal order. As soon as we begin to enquire into the practical attitude of man in these times toward God and his destiny, we are confronted with a two- fold speculative problem, viz. the medieval conception of man and its solution of the mystery of grace and liberty.
