Bertrand Du Guesclin: His Part in the Liberation of France

Avellino Poirier, Fordham University

Abstract

In the long list of heroes that made the glory of Medieval France, Bertrand du Guesclin ranks next to the illustrious Capetians who built national unity, and close to Joan of Arc who restored it. The story of his valorous deeds would hardly suffice to explain his popularity; it so happens that gratitude for the incomparable services of this famous warrior has added much to the admiration inspired by his glorious achievements. A soldier that increases by his victories the prestige of his nation is undoubtedly a great hero; but a captain who, by dint of his prowess and daring courage, succeeds in lifting his country from the ruinous depths into which it has fallen, is something more than a hero: he is a liberator.
