The Problem of Pantheism in John Scotus Eruigena

Mary C Gannon, Fordham University

Abstract

John Scotus Eriugena, whose name has long been connected with the problem of pantheism, was born in Ireland probably between the years 800 and 815 and is regarded by many as 1 the first truly great name in medieval philosophy. He received his early training in the Irish monasteries and it was here that he acquired his remarkable knowledge of the Latin language and literature, of natural sciences and of dialectic. Here too, he came in contact with the treatises of the Greek and Latin Fathers whose works were to have so important an influence on his later writings.
