The Contra Dantem of Guido Vernani

Benedict T Leonardi, Fordham University

Abstract

The position maintained by Dante and Guido cannot be fully comprehended unless a background of facts and ideas, which were present in the minds of both authors, is brought into consideration. Had not both Guido and Dante been conscious of these facts, their compositions could not have appeared. Neither the Monarchia nor the Contra Dantem makes any reference to contemporary history. It has therefore been necessary to refer to passages from the Commedia to show how vivid these facts were in the mind of Dante.
