Labor's Struggle for Industrial Status in the United States Steel Corporation

Gabrielle Healey, Fordham University

Abstract

The United States steel industry is one of the key industries in our country. The industries producing capital goods depend on steel for their basic material. Steel pro- duction, then, reflects the demand for capital goods. It also reflects the demand for building-construction and auto- mobiles. Since the introduction of the all steel "turret top the automobile industry now consumes twenty-five per- cent of all the United States steel. Steel production has been increased lately due to the new demand for stainless steel furniture, household trimmings, home and office gad- gets and chromium steel pots and goblets. Besides, steel is the basic war industry. At present the great increase in armaments has sent steel production soaring. Thus steel may be considered the barometer of industrial production generally.
