Violet J Rainer, Fordham University

Abstract

The memorable conflict in which the head of the French kingdom, Philip, IV, and the head of the Church, Boniface VIII, engaged at the opening of the fourteenth century, and which ended tragically for Boniface and disastrously for the unity of Christendom, is one of the events which most dis- tinctly marks the passage from the Mediaeval to the Modern period, as they are conveniently known.
