The Adventurer of John Hawkesworth

James F Clyne, Fordham University

Abstract

Because of the minor role played by Hawkesworth in the literature of his day, little attention has been given to him since his death. Accordingly, critical comment concerning his work is limited in extent. It is, moreover, generally unpraiseworthy in kind. Yet, aside from whatever qualifications to fame that he himself possessed, his association in The Adventurer with Samuel Johnson and Joseph Warton lends interest to that periodical and suggests the reason for considering Hawkesworth's part in its production.
