The Impact of Yoga on Black Womens' Mental, Physical, and Spiritual Health

Kimberly Grocher, Fordham University

Abstract

There are many health disparities that impact Black women in the United States. Yoga is an effective supplemental treatment for many health conditions. There is little research that examines the impact of yoga on health outcomes for Black women. This study explores the factors that influence Black women’s engagement in yoga; its perceived impact on their physical, spiritual, and mental health; and what factors constitute culturally relevant messaging to Black women about yoga.Guided by the phenomenological method, 49 semi-structured interviews were conducted July-August 2021 with Black women ages 18 and up who reported engaging in yoga. Participants were recruited via purposive and snowball sampling methods. Participants identified several factors that were either barriers or contributors to their engaging in yoga. Participants noted positive and meaningful impacts on their physical health, mental health, and spiritual health, and provided suggestions for effective marketing/messaging to Black women.
