Intermediate Education in Ireland, 1878-1924
Abstract
Ko state provision for the support and no stimulus for the promotion of secondary education of which Catholics could avail, existed in Ireland before 1878, For Protestants large endowments were available in Grammar schools, Royal schools, Erasmus Smith schools and other places; numerous *exhibitions* or scholarships were at their disposal in Trinity College, and the bait of prizes at the Queen’s Colleges served as an additional incentive to study Thus to a great extent the road to the professions was open to Protestants only, and Catholics entered the race of life heavily handicapped.
