Abstract

In the light of recent discussions and legislation around the extension of public programs for the health care of the aged, sharp attention has been focused on the multiple and complex problems about which there already was a heightened awareness. The number of elderly over sixty-five years old in the population was 17.7 million individuals in the United States in 1963, and as can be seen in Table 1, there has been a progressive increase in the aged group since 1950.
