Some Administrative Problems of Early Catholic Schools

Francis J Donohue, Fordham University

Abstract

This study, therefore, is a consideration of administrative problems which confronted The Roman Catholic Church and its priests in their educational efforts from colonial times up to about 1840, in a territory which can be roughly described as lying between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mississippi River, north of Florida, and south of the Great Lakes and the present Canadian border. The phrase "administrative problems" will be employed to designate those perplexing questions in the establishment and management of schools which required solution before catholic education could become firmly established in this country, together with the various solutions proposed for these questions.
