A Critical Evaluation of the Ultimate Aims of Education of Edward L. Thorndike and Arthur I. Gates

Ferdinand J Vonderhaar, Fordham University

Abstract

It shall be our endeavor in this dissertation to present a critical evaluation of the ultimate aims or education propounded by Edward L. Thorndike and Arthur I. Gates in their book, "Elementary Principles of Education." As stated in the preface: "the book is devoted primarily to the purpose of establishing sound principles for the guidance or teachers in their most important daily tasks." We enter upon this study, not in a spirit or destructive criticism, but accepting their invitation expressed in the preface, "to take a critical attitude toward the text," (1), we desire to view the soundness of their principles.
