The Origin, Growth and Development of the Catholic Schools in Yonkers, New York

Francis C Flynn, Fordham University

Abstract

It is my purpose in the following pages to show the origin, growth and development of the Catholic Schools in Yonkers, New York. In order to treat this subject properly, it is necessary to give the background of the parish, for the parish is the mother of the school. The parishes are treated in periods. The first period which commences in 1848 and extends to 1890, treats of the first two churches and parochial schools in Yonkers. The next period, 1890-1934, gives the history of the churches and schools that saw their origin during these years. Private schools, high schools and business schools are combined under separate chapters. Since the thesis gives the origin, growth and development of Catholic schools, a chapter has been devoted to those institutions whose aim and purpose is the education of aspirants to the priesthood.
