The Development of Leadership in the Intermediate Grades of the Public Elementary Schools of Jersey City

Abstract

The purpose of this dissertation is to indicate to what extent traits or qualities of leadership can be developed. In the Intermediate Grades of the Public Elementary Schools of Jersey City with a view to having these traits utilized in life outside of the school and to discuss, in a limited way, methods and materials which can be utilized in the development of these traits ·or qualities.Direct instruction as a method,: has its place in the development of- desirable leadership qualities.. It is discussed under the topic "methods, and -materials-suited to development. Because of the stage of development of children in the intermediate grades, direct instruction on leadership qualities,, as such, is not stressed. The pedagogical princip1e "learning by doing" underlies the provision of opportunities for exercise of leadership qualities.
