The Contributions of the Sisters of Charity to Catholic Education in New Jersey

Miriam Vincent Mahon, Fordham University

Abstract

Through the labors of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul in New Jersey there has been reared a splendid edifice of Catholic education which has been an enduring monument to the preservation of Catholicity in the State and surrounding territory since the foundation of the Community in 1859. No individual in the Church annals of New Jersey has done more for the advancement of Catholic education and the service of humanity than the venerable founder of the Community, Mother Mary Xavier Mehegan. She it was who instituted the parochial school system in New Jersey, a system which has largely contributed to New Jersey’s rank as one of the foremost educational centres in the United States.
