Narcotic Drug Addiction and Tuberculosis: A Study of the Methadone - Chest Disease Program at the Nathan B. Van Etten Hospital, Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, New York City, 1966-1967
Abstract
This study will examine a distinctive program at Nathan B. Van Etten Hospital, Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, which addresses itself to the treatment of narcotic addicts with chest diseases, using the methadone maintenance protocol. Heroin addicts at the hospital had had a high irregular discharge rate (49%), and the program was instituted to attempt to control such patients’ leaving the hospital against medical advice. (The majority of the patients in the program were diagnosed as having pulmonary tuberculosis, ranging in degree from minimal to far advanced.
