The Response to Treatment of Emotionally Disturbed Children in Foster Care: A Follow-Up Study of 40 Children Identified as Emotionally Disturbed by the Catholic Guardian Society of Brooklyn
Abstract
Background of the Study. In 1967, a study was conducted in the Catholic child care agencies of the Diocese of Brook- lyn to identify the number of emotionally disturbed children in care and the nature and degree of pathology which these children exhibited. In a previous study of 483 Catholic children of New York City who were awaiting placement in 1966, it was found that among the 327 children whose place- ments were delayed, 114 were emotionally disturbed.2 The directors of the participating agencies indicated that the placement of emotionally disturbed children presents one of the most serious problems in child welfare.
