The Development of New York State Law Regarding the Definition of Mental Illness, the Provisions for Care and the Treatment of the Mentally Ill and the Procedures for Their Commitment and Discharge
Abstract
This will be a study of the development of the Mental Hygiene Law in the State of New York. The study will focus upon the definition of mental illness in the law, the provisions for care and treatment and the procedures for commitment and discharge. I have limited the study to these four areas not only for reasons of time and space but also because what is said of them also holds true of other areas of the Mental Hygiene Law. Moreover, study will not deal with the “criminally insane,“ but only with those mentally ill who have not committed any crimes.
