A Survey and Analysis of Opinions and Practices of Parochial-School Pupils in Relation to Home Assignments

M. Jean Rosaire Bedotto, Fordham University

Abstract

Homework has been and still remains a controversial issue in the elementary school. Survey studies have been conducted in which questionnaires have been sent to superintendants, supervisors, parents, teachers, and pupils to ascertain their opinions concerning the value, the amount, and the types of homework that should be given. Replies indicate that a wide variety of opinions exist within each group and among the groups. Some advocate a substantial amount of homework for the educational welfare of the child and the development of good character traits. Others claim that homework has little value and deprives the child of leisure for other activities.
