A Study of the Social Worker's Function as Perceived by the Nurse in a Home Health Agency

Mary Dolores Mitchell, Fordham University

Abstract

The fields of social casework and public health nursing have a great deal in common, Democratic humanitarian ideals provide a foundational base for both professions and their members are dedicated to service for the welfare of mankind with special focus on the basic unit of community, the family. The professional body of knowledge of each is derived from common sources such as medicine, psychiatry, sociology, psychology and education. Both professions use the interview as a tool and keep records of their work. Finally, social work and public health nursing are relatively new professions and therefore are still developing their philosophy, programs and techniques.
