Blessed Sacrament Parish: A Social Survey of the Oldest Catholic Parish in New Rochelle

May Adele Cecelia Geils, Fordham University

Abstract

The Blessed Sacrament Parish is the oldest Catholic parish in the City of New Rochelle, New York, and it is a fitting action at this time to evaluate the contributions made by the parish to the community from 1848 to April 1952.Historical information will be presented for background purposes to show the community setting, the origin and development of the parish, as well as the significant role of the parish in the community for the past 103 years. The focus of the study will, however, be on the present work of the parish and on its current contributions to the City in the areas of religion, education, social service and recreation. For statistical purposes, a comparison will be made which will point up the current situation and trends, and the period from January 1949 to April 1952 will be used.
